Golf Carts Are Not Street Legal in Newnan

The trend of riding golf carts in streets throughout the country has led some to state officials making them street legal. They are legal in most southern states including Florida and, more recently, Roswell. With this in mind the residents of SummerGrove, Newnan, decided to approach their Mayor Keith Brady and Councilman Clayton Hicks to allow them. After consideration and input from local authorities, it was reported that the request by the residents was declined by the Mayor due to health and safety reasons. It was reported in the Times Herald that the community was disappointed at the decision: “When the chief and other staff members reported back to council their recommendation was no — citing safety reasons and studies that suggest injuries related to golf cart use have increased. A SummerGrove representative called the safety study distorted during Tuesday night’s meeting. Following the no action by council representatives of Yamaha Golf Cart Company and the National Golf Car Manufacturers Association said they were disappointed in the city’s lack of action in today’s environment of $4 a gallon gasoline.” Many people were hoping for the decision to go their way due to the rising costs of gas and by using electric golf carts as transportation; they could save money as well as save the environment from global warming.
